Before Antietam
He enlisted in Company E, 13th New Jersey Infantry on 12 August 1862 and mustered as Private on 25 August.
On the Campaign
He was slightly wounded, hit on a knuckle, in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was promoted to Corporal on 1 November 1862 and First Lieutenant 1 June 1864. He mustered out on 8 June 1865 at Washington, DC. He was honored by brevet to Captain "for gallant and meritorious services during the campaign in Georgia and the Carolinas", to date from 13 March 1865.
