Before Antietam

He enlisted at age 30 in Company D, 13th New Jersey Infantry on 17 July 1862 and mustered on 25 August as 2nd Sergeant.

On the Campaign

He was in action with his Company at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to First Sergeant of his company on 1 November and Sergeant Major of the Regiment on 18 June 1863. He was commissioned 2d Lieutenant of Company G on 28 May 1863, but was not mustered at that rank, and was discharged 12 June 1863 to accept the commission of Captain, Company A, 33rd New Jersey Infantry.

He was mortally wounded in the left arm above the elbow while leading his company in action on Lookout Mountain near Chattanooga, TN on 23 November 1863, and died on 19 December in US Army General Hospital #3 in Chattanooga.

His widow began receiving a US pension in February 1864.

Going by Gilbert, he married Sarah Ann Decker (1834-1911) in December 1853 and they had 4 children.
