Before Antietam
He enlisted at age 23 in Company D, 13th New Jersey Infantry on 13 August 1862 and mustered as Corporal.
The rest of the War
He was promoted to Sergeant on 1 MAy 1863. He was slightly wounded in action at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May. He was in the hospital, ill, on 4 July 1863 and was back on duty 1 August. He was again ill, in Tennesee in June 1864 and back with his unit on 15 October. He mustered out of service with his Company on 8 June 1865.
