He enrolled as Captain of the Sturges Rifles on 6 May 1861 in Chicago. His commission was dated 22 July 1861.

On the Campaign

He commanded the Sturges Rifles, part of the Headquarters Guard, Army of the Potomac. Most of his Company were not at Antietam, having been detailed to Washington, DC on 7 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He resigned his commission on 16 October 1862.
