Before Antietam

He enlisted at age 26 in Company D, 13th New Jersey Infantry on 4 August 1862 and mustered as Private.

On the Campaign

He was in action with his Company at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

On the march from Sharpsburg to Fairfax Station he was left near Hillsboro, sick and was captured there. He was paroled and returned to duty in June 1863. He was wounded in action at Kolb's (Kulp's) Farm, GA on 22 June 1864 and sent to a hospital in Nashville, TN. He was back with his Company 25 April 1865 and mustered out of service with them on 8 June 1865.
