Before Antietam

He enlisted at age 27 in Company D, 13th New Jersey Infantry on 1 August 1862 and mustered as Private.

On the Campaign

He was in action with his Company at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

On 18 January 1863 he was sent, sick, to Armory Square US Army General Hospital, Washington, DC, and was discharged from there 9 March 1863. In the 1863 City Directory for Newark, he was listed in the coffee and spices business. 2 years later, 9 March 1865, he was commissioned Captain, Company I, 40th New Jersey Infantry, the last regiment organized in the state. He mustered out of service with his Company on 13 July 1865.

After the War

He was in business in Newark by 1867.
