Before Antietam

He enlisted at age 27 in Company D, 13th New Jersey Infantry on 13 August 1862 and mustered as Private.

On the Campaign

On the march to Antietam he was left at Frederick, MD with a 'poisoned face', date not given.

The rest of the War

He returned to his Company on Maryland Heights, MD in October or November 1862. He was in action at Chancellorsville, VA and Gettysburg, PA. On 27 July 1863 he was at Stanton Hospital, Washington, DC with the same facial complaint. He was sent to Camp Convalescent 28 September 1863, and was furloughed to Newark, NJ. He was then at Ward Hospital, Newark. On 6 May 1864 he was transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps, and was discharged 18 July 1865.
