Age 19, he enlisted on 30 April 1861 in Bath and mustered as Private, Company A, 23rd New York Infantry on 16 May.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was treated at Smoketown Hospital, Sharpsburg, and returned to duty. He mustered out with his Company on 22 May 1863 in Elmira, NY.
