Before Antietam

He enlisted in Company B, First Maine Infantry, for three-months service, as Sergeant from 3 May to 5 August 1861. Then age 23, from Portland, he enrolled in Company A, 10th Maine Infantry on 4 October 1861. He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant, and was promoted to First Lieutenant, date not given.

On the Campaign

He commanded Company B as senior officer present, and was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to Captain, date not given. He transferred as Captain to Company F on 30 November 1863 and to Company F, 29th Maine Infantry on 31 May 1864. He was discharged 8 August 1865.
