Before Antietam
He served as Private, Company C, in the 3-month First Maine Infantry from May to August 1861. Giving his age as 22, from Portland, he then enlisted as Corporal in Company C, 10th Maine Infantry on 5 October 1861. He was promoted to Sergeant on 10 August 1862.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in the knee in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was discharged from the 10th Infantry on 28 February 1863 on account of wounds, but re-enlisted in Company C, 29th Maine Infantry on 11 September and was appointed Sergeant on 17 December 1863. He transferred to Company B and was promoted to First Sergeant on 30 May 1864. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, Company C on 11 December 1864. He was honored by brevet to First Lieutenant 13 March 1865, and mustered out of service with his Company on 21 June 1866.
