Before Antietam
Son of a laborer, in 1860 he was a 16 year old clerk living with his parents and 3 siblings at Saco, York County, ME. He enlisted on 16 October 1861 and mustered as a Sergeant in Company A, 10th Maine Infantry. He was commissioned First Lieutenant on 27 May 1862.
On the Campaign
He commanded Company A as senior officer present in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He enrolled in Company A, 29th Maine Infantry on 31 May 1864 and was promoted to Captain, date not given, but declined the commission and mustered out on 18 October 1864.
After the War
By 1870 and to at least 1880 he was a bookkeeper in Boston, MA, probably for (or as) a hatter. By 1900 he was a hat merchant in Milton, MA and was a dealer in military uniforms there in 1910.
