Before Antietam
Age 28, from Portland, he enlisted as Principal Musician (Fife Major), 10th Maine Infantry on 4 October 1861.
On the Campaign
He was with the Regiment in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was discharged by War Department General Order 126 of 20 December 1862, but "remained as citizen with the regiment, instructing and leading the drum corps". He enlisted as Sergeant Major of the 29th Maine Infantry on 17 December 1863 and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, Company K on 24 July 1864. He was appointed First Lieutenant on 18 October, and Adjutant of the Regiment 23 December. He was honored by brevets to Captain and Major on 13 March 1865. He mustered out with the 29th on 21 June 1866.
After the War
By the time of the 1894 regimental reunion, he was living in Providence, RI.
