Before Antietam

At age 33, from Portland, he enrolled as First Lieutenant, Company C, First Maine Infantry for 3 months' service on 3 May 1861. He was then commissioned Captain, Company C, 10th Maine Infantry on 5 October 1861.

On the Campaign

He led his Company in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He mustered out of the 10th Infantry in May 1863, and was commissioned Captain, Company C, 29th Maine Infantry on 17 December 1863. He was honored by brevet to Major on 13 March 1865, and resigned and was discharged 15 March 1866.

After the War

He was clerk of the Portland, ME post office in 1892.
