Before Antietam

He had been a Private in Company B, First Maine Infantry for 3 Months service May - August 1861. Age 19, from Damariscotta, he enlisted as Corporal, Company B, 10th Maine Infantry, and mustered on 4 October 1861. He was promoted to Sergeant, to date from 14 January 1862.

On the Campaign

He was with his Company in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862, and led the Company after Lt. Turner was wounded.

The rest of the War

The winter of 1862-63 he was appointed 2nd Lieutenant (mustered 2 March) and mustered out with his Company on 7 May 1863.
