Before Antietam

Age 19, from Portland, he enlisted as Private, Company E, First Maine Infantry for 3 months service on 3 May 1861. He enlisted as First Sergeant, Company E, 10th Maine Infantry, and mustered on 4 October 1861.

On the Campaign

He was acting 2nd Lieutenant (commissioned to date from 9 August 1862), and commanded his Company in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was "present, sick" with his Company on 1 November 1862, but went home to Portland, and died there of consumption (tuberculosis) on 18 December 1862.
