Before Antietam

Age 25, from Norway, he enlisted as Sergeant, Company G, First Maine Infantry for 3 months service on 3 May 1861. He enrolled as 2nd Lieutenant, Company G, 10th Maine Infantry, and mustered on 21 October 1861.

On the Campaign

He commanded his Company in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He mustered out with his Company in May 1863 and was commissioned First Lieutenant, Company G, 29th Maine Infantry on 16 December 1863. He was promoted to Captain on 6 November 1864 and mustered out 14 March 1866.
