Before Antietam
Age 20, from Fort Kent, he mustered as Corporal, Company D, 10th Maine Infantry on 4 October 1861.
On the Campaign
He was in action with his Company at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was promoted to Sergeant on 1 January 1863. He then enlisted in Company D, 29th Maine Infantry. He reenlisted in February 1864, was wounded in the thigh in action at Cedar Creek, VA, on 19 October 1864, and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, Company K, 30 December 1864. He was honored by brevet to First Lieutenant 13 March 1865, and mustered out 21 June 1866.
