Before Antietam

Age 22, from Buxton, he enlisted as Private in the three-month First Maine Infantry in May 1861. He then enlisted as Sergeant in Company E, 10th Maine Infantry on 4 October 1861. He was promoted to First Sergeant on 10 August 1862.

On the Campaign

He was in action with his Company at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on 18 December 1862 and mustered out with his Company in May 1863.
