Age 24, he enlisted as Private on 4 June 1861 in Company H, 12th Ohio Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was serving on detached duty with the First Independent Battery, Ohio Light Artillery at Antietam. Battery commander Captain McMullin reported:
During the day, Henry Riber [sic], of Co. H, 12th Reg. O. Vols, on detached duty with the Battery, was instantly killed by a 6 pd. round shot passing through the body.
