Before Sharpsburg
He was a lawyer and postmaster in Franklin County, VA, then a farmer in Texas. He enlisted as Private in Company B, 2nd Virginia Cavalry 13 May 1861. He was appointed Lieutenant and aide-de-camp (ADC) to his brother General Jubal Early on 11 September 1861.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in the left leg in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He resigned on 19 November 1862. He was Volunteer ADC to his brother at Gettysburg in 1863, and wounded slightly in the foot there. He then served as a conscription officer in Lynchburg, VA.
After the War
He was a lumber man and salt maker in Charleston, WV.
