He enlisted as Private, First North Carolina (Bethel) Infantry, date not given. He was appointed Captain and Assistant Commissary (ACS), 28th North Carolina Infantry on 18 October 1861. He was assigned as ACS to General Branch on 5 August 1862.

On the Campaign

He was on Branch's staff at Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

He moved to General Lane's staff to January 1863. He was assigned as ACS to General Wilcox 24 August 1863. He was in a detachment from the Army of Northern Virginia in February 1865 chasing deserters in North Carolina.
