He enlisted in Company M, First Texas Infantry when they organized in Trinity County, and mustered for Confederate service as Private on 5 May 1862 at Sumpter, TX.

On the Campaign

He was slightly wounded in the leg in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to First Corporal, date not given, and captured at Knoxville, TN on 3 December 1863. He deserted and enlisted in the US Navy at Rock Island Barracks, IL, on 25 January 1864.

Service information from Davis,1 as A. Carlton, and Simpson.2 He's also seen as J.R. Colton. Sharpsburg wound detail from a 22 September casualty list by Lt. Col. Work published in the Galveston News of 1 November 1862. He was thought to have died in Federal prison during the war, according to Sgt. D.H. Hamilton in his History of Company M (1925).
