Before Sharpsburg
He was a lawyer and postmaster in Franklin County, VA, and a farmer in Texas before the War. He enlisted as Private, Company B, 2nd Virginia Cavalry on 13 May 1861. He was assigned as Lieutenant and aide-de-camp to his brother, General Jubal A. Early on 11 September 1861.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in the leg in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He resigned on 19 November 1862, but was back on the General's staff by mid-1863 at Gettysburg, where he was slightly wounded in the foot. He was later a conscription officer at Lynchburg, VA.
After the War
He was a lumberman and made salt in Charleston, WV.
