Before Sharpsburg
He was a farmer at Craigsville, SC before the War. He enlisted as Sergeant, Company A, 9th South Carolina Infantry on 1 April 1861, and was commissioned First Lieutenant, Company B, 6th South Carolina, date not given.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was promoted to Captain and Assistant Adjutant General, and assigned to the staff of General Micah Jenkins on 1 January 1863. He was slightly wounded in action at Wauhatchie, TN in October 1863. He transferred to General Bratton in May 1864, to General Gary on 9 August 1864 and as Assistant Adjutant and Inspector General to General Longstreet on 14 December 1864. He was paroled at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.
After the War
He was an insurance agent, a legislator, and secretary of state for South Carolina.
