Before Sharpsburg
He was a wealthy merchant in Baltimore before the War. He enlisted in Company H, First Maryland Infantry (CSA) in July 1861. He was volunteer aide-de-camp to General Archer during the Seven Days battles in June 1862, and was appointed Lieutenant and Ordnance Officer on the General's staff on 1 July 1862.
On the Campaign
From General Archer's Report:
[at Sharpsburg] Captain R. H. Archer, my assistant adjutant-general, though not yet recovered from a severe illness; Lieutenant Thomas, aide, and Lieutenant [George] Lemmon, ordnance officer, rendered brave and efficient assistance, and charged with the troops upon the enemy ... [at Shepherdstown] Captain Archer and Lieutenants Thomas and Lemmon, of my staff, rendered valuable and efficient assistance.
The rest of the War
He was captured at Cashtown, PA on the Gettysburg Campaign on 5 July 1863 and a prisoner until exchanged in December 1864. He was posted as Ordnance Officer at the Richmond Arsenal in January 1865, and to Wickham's Brigade on 6 March 1865. He was paroled at Greensboro, NC on 5 May 1865.
After the War
He returned to his business. He moved to the Confederate Soldier's Home at Pikesville, MD in October 1904.
