Before Sharpsburg
He was appointed Lieutenant and aide-de-camp to D.H. Hill 30 September 1861. He was promoted to Captain and assigned as Ordnance Officer on 3 June 1862.
On the Campaign
From General D.H. Hill's Report:
Captain West and Lieut. T. J. Moore, ordnance officers, discharged faithfully their duty and rendered important service on the field at South Mountain.
The rest of the War
He resigned his commission on 30 September 1862, but apparently remained with General Hill as a volunteer ADC for the rest of the War. He was paroled 6 May 1865 at Greensboro, NC.
