Before Sharpsburg

By 1860 he owned a lot in the town of Goodson (later Bristol), VA. He enlisted at Lynchburg on 13 May 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company B, 2nd Virginia Cavalry. He was detailed as courier to General D.H. Hill on 17 December 1861 and was probably promoted to Sergeant, date not given.

On the Campaign

From General D.H. Hill's Report:

Sergeant Harmeling and Privates Thomas Jones and Minter, of the couriers, acquitted themselves handsomely.

The rest of the War

He was with General Hill to at least April 1863 and was listed as Sergeant of Couriers in May 1865.
