James Hamilton

Before Sharpsburg

He was admitted to the US Military Academy at West Point, NY in 1858, and attended, but did not graduate. He was commissioned Lieutenant of Infantry, CSA on 16 March 1861, and was on recruiting duty. He resigned that commission on 24 June 1861, and was Lieutenant and aide-de-camp (ADC) to General Richard Taylor by May 1862. He was ADC to General Hood by Second Manassas in August.

On the Campaign

From General Hood's Report:

Too much cannot be said of the members of my staff ... my two aides (Maj. B. H. Blanton and Lieut. James Hamilton), had their horses shot during the battle of Sharpsburg while most gallantly pushing forward the troops and transmitting orders.

The rest of the War

He was appointed Captain, Provisional Army of the Confederate States (PACS) on 5 November 1862 and promoted Major 1 March 1864. He commanded artillery under General Wheeler in August 1864.

After the War

He died young, at about age 27 in 1867.
