Age 23 years, he enlisted 7 July 1861 at Elmira and mustered in as Private, Company D, 33rd New York Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was transferred to Company G on 18 October 1862, but died of typhoid fever at a hospital in Hagerstown, MD on 6 November 1862.

The rest of the War

He was initially buried in a plot near the Alms House in Hagerstown but was reinterred at the new Antietam National Cemetery in about 1867.
