Before Antietam
He enrolled on 18 April 1861 and was commissioned First Lieutenant of Company A, 10th Indiana Infantry for 3 months' service on 25 April. He mustered out with them in Indianapolis on 6 August. He enrolled again, on 3 August 1861 at Lafayette, IN and mustered as Captain, Company I, 2nd New York Cavalry on 3 September 1861.
On the Campaign
He commanded Companies A, B, I, and K of the 2nd New York Cavalry in Maryland; they were assigned as cavalry escort to General Hooker, First Army Corps.
The rest of the War
He was promoted to Major on 28 January 1863 and resigned his commission on 28 April 1864.
