A 23 year old shoemaker from Groveland, he enlisted 26 July 1861 in Company A, 19th Massachusetts Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He transferred to Company D, 9th Regiment, Veteran Reserve Corps on 28 December 1863, reenlisted 14 May 1864, and mustered out on 22 November 1865.
