Before Antietam

A spinner from Lowell, possibly as young as 16 years, he gave his age as 19 when he enlisted 26 July 1861 in Company B, 19th Massachusetts Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was discharged 28 October 1862 to enlist in the US Regular Army. He was enlisted that date at Harrisburg, PA, (again giving his age as 19) in Company E, 2nd Battalion, 15th US Infantry. He deserted from his unit on 3 July 1863.

After the War

He returned to the Army 29 June 1868 and was discharged 24 July 1869 at Columbus, TX, then in Company E, 11th US Infantry.
