Before Antietam

A 19 year old mechanic from Randolph, he enlisted in Company D, 4th Massachusetts Infantry for 3 months on 16 April 1861, and mustered out 22 July. He enlisted again, on 17 March 1862, in Company D, 19th Massachusetts Infantry. He was appointed Corporal, date not given, and was reported missing near Glendale, VA 30 June 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the leg in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was appointed Sergeant after Antietam, and wounded again, in the thigh in action at Fredericksburg, VA on 13 December 1862. He reenlisted 4 January 1864, and was wounded for the third time, slightly, on 10 May 1864 at Spottsylvania, VA. He was captured in action 22 June 1864 near Petersburg, VA, and released on 17 May 1865. He mustered out with his Company on 30 June 1865.
