At 28 years old he enlisted on 28 August 1861 in Company I, 19th Massachusetts Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in the left hip and thigh in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was treated at the Hoffman Farm hospital at Sharpsburg, then sent to Frederick, MD, where he died of wounds on 14 January 1863.
