Before Antietam

A 22 year old mariner in Thomaston, ME, he enlisted in Company G, 8th Massachusetts Infantry on 15 April 1861, for three months, and mustered out on 1 August. He then enlisted in Company K, 19th Massachusetts Infantry on 13 August 1861. He was wounded in the chest in action near Glendale, VA on 30 June 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was discharged for disability, from wounds, on 13 December 1862 at Baltimore, MD. On 6 April 1863 he enlisted under the alias J. William Jones in Company F, 7th Maine Infantry, and was wounded in action in October 1863, place not given. He was transferred to the First Maine Veteran Infantry on 21 August 1864, promoted to Sergeant, and discharged 5 July 1865.
