Age 21, he enlisted in New York City to serve three years, and mustered in as Private, Company D, 69th New York Infantry on 1 January 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was transferred to Company B on 12 June 1863 and promoted to Corporal. He reenlisted on 4 January 1864. He was promoted to First Sergeant on 1 June 1864 and was commissioned First Lieutenant 31 October 1864 (rank to date from 1 September). He mustered out with his Company on 30 June 1865 at Alexandria, VA.
