He enlisted in Gonzales County as a Private in Company A, 4th Texas Infantry on 18 March 1862.

On the Campaign

He was with his Company at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September and was initially thought wounded and missing in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862. By January 1863 he was "supposed killed."
