A 22 year old farmer from Coatesville, he enlisted as Private, Company A, 27th Indiana Infantry 12 September 1861. He was reported as missing at Winchester, VA on 24 May 1862, but returned to his unit.

He was killed in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
