He was mortally wounded in action near Atlanta, GA on 22 July 1864 and died at Marietta on 17 September 1864.

His service from Brown1 and the Historical Data Systems database, which have him as George W. Herrondon. His gravesite is on Findagrave; his stone has him as G.W. Herendon. The 1860 Census listed him as George W. Herenden, the spelling we use here.
