An 18 year old farmer in Lawrence County, he mustered as Private, Company D, 27th Indiana Infantry on 29 March 1862 - he was originally recruited for the 16th Indiana Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was discharged on 15 October 1862 to transfer to the Regular US Army. He enlisted 23 October 1862 at Sandy Hook, MD in Battery M, 4th United States Artillery and mustered out at Bridgeport, AL on 27 March 1865.
