A 24 year old farmer in Johnson County, he mustered as Private, Company G, 27th Indiana Infantry on 12 September 1861.

On the Campaign

He was with his Company in Maryland.

The rest of the War

He was arrested in October and courtmartialed on 9 October 1862 for cowardice at Antietam. He was drummed out of the service at Stafford Court House, VA on 4 February 1863, his head shaved and an India ink "C" inscribed on his right hip.
