He was mortally wounded in the arm and chest in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was treated at a field hospital, probably the Division hospital on the Dr. Otho J. Smith farm or at the Smoketown hospital, but died of wounds on 4 October 1862.
