Before Sharpsburg
A 22 year old blacksmith's apprentice in Augusta County, he mustered as Private, Company A, 52nd Virginia Infantry on 9 July 1861 in Staunton. He reenlisted on 1 May 1862, and was appointed Color Sergeant, date not given.
On the Campaign
He was mortally wounded in action while carrying the colors at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He died of wounds in Shepherdstown, VA the next day.
