Before Sharpsburg
A 30 year old resident of Rockbridge County, he mustered as Private, Company E, 52nd Virginia Infantry on 1 August 1861.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in the hand in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He returned to duty in October 1862. He was wounded and captured in action at Winchester, VA on 21 July 1864 and imprisoned at Point Lookout, MD on 24 July. He died while a prisoner there of typhoid fever on 30 July 1864.
