Before Sharpsburg
A 21 year old laborer in Augusta County, he mustered as Private, Company G, 52nd Virginia Infantry on 16 June 1862 at Mt. Meridian, VA. He was absent without leave on the day he enlisted, but returned to duty on 31 August 1862.

He was wounded in the right hip and captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

He was discharged for disability on 20 June 1862.
