Before Sharpsburg
A 19 year old farmhand in Augusta County, he mustered as Private, Company B, 52nd Virginia Infantry on 16 July 1861 in Waynesboro, VA. He was absent without leave from 17 July 1862 to 1 August 1862.

He was mortally wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He died of wounds on 6 October 1862 in a hospital in Winchester, VA.
