Before Sharpsburg
A 15 year old Rockbridge County resident, he mustered as Private, Company E, 52nd Virginia Infantry on 1 August 1861.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in the thigh and captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was held at Fort McHenry, MD by October and was exchanged 10 November. He was furloughed for 60 days on 15 November 1862. He was listed as absent, sick on 4 June 1863 and retuned to duty about 31 December 1863. He may have had later service in Company C, First Virginia Cavalry.
