A 21 year old resident of Rockbridge County, he mustered as Private, Company E, 52nd Virginia Infantry on 1 August 1861 in Staunton, VA.
On the Campaign
He was captured in Frederick, MD on 14 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was exchanged on 30 September 1862 and returned to his Company by the end of October. He was mortally wounded in the side in action at Spotsylvania Court House, VA on 19 May 1864 and died on 25 May.
