Before Sharpsburg

A 20 year old hand on his father's farm in Russell County, he was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, Company K, 48th Virginia Infantry on 25 June 1861. He was elected First Lieutenant on 21 April 1862. He was sick in a hospital in Charlottesville, VA in July and August 1862, but returned to duty.

On the Campaign

He commanded his Company (and possibly the Regiment) as senior officer present, but was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
