Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was 18 years old and lived on his parent's farm at Woodstock in Shenandoah County, VA. He mustered as Private, Company C, 33rd Virginia Infantry on 3 June 1861 and was promoted to Sergeant on 21 April 1862. He was wounded in action at Malvern Hill, VA on 1 July 1862, but returned to duty.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
